What Is The Difference Between Eau De Toilette and Eau De Parfum?

Many people just walk into their local branch of Boots or The Fragrance Shop and ask for a bottle of their favourite fragrance. They don’t think a great deal about what it actually is. By that, I mean there is a difference between EDT or Eau De Toilette and EDP or Eau De Parfum. There are also other variations, which we will look at later in this article.

Most of the bottles of perfume or after shave you buy in the shops will be EDT. This is cheaper for the fragrance houses to produce and, seeing as most people don’t know the difference, it pays for them. But you should be looking for EDP. Let’s take a look at why.

What Is The Difference Between Eau De Toilette and Eau De Parfum?

Eau De Toilette

This is a light spray. It typically contains between 5% and 15% of pure fragrance oils. The rest of the bottle is made up of alcohol and acqua. Together these produce a fragrance that lasts for around 3 hours on the skin after you’ve sprayed it.

This means you should carry your bottle with you as the day goes on and reapply. A 9-hour work day (including the commute) will leave you having to reapply twice to make sure you still smell just as great at the end of the day as you did at the beginning.

Eau De Parfum

Don’t be fooled into thinking that the word ‘parfum’ means that this product only applies to female scents. It doesn’t. EDP is a stronger mix of oils than EDT. It contains between 15% and 20% oils in the mix. Again, the rest is made up of alcohol and acqua. The alcohol is there to make the oil and water mix as well as give a consistency that allows it to come out of the nozzle in a fine spray.

Because of this, EDP last up to 8 hours on the skin after spraying. This means you would probably be safe spraying once before you leave for work and staying fresh all day long.

Many people think that there is no difference between the two. As you can see, the EDP can save you a great deal of money. Buy quality, spray once and the great smell stays with you all day long.

We only sell Eau De Parfum. It is a higher quality and lasts longer on the skin.

Are There Other Types Of Fragrance?

Yes! There are a few other types of fragrance. These include –

  • Eau Fraiche. This is diluted and only used as a freshener. It only contains between 1% and 3% fragrance oils. The smell typically lasts for less than an hour.
  • Eau De Cologne. This term derives from the fact that many fragrances were first made in the German city of Cologne. This has only around 2-4% fragrance oil and lasts little more than an hour.
  • Parfum. This is a very oily mix that has a sensuous feel to it. There is between 20% and 30% fragrance oils in this product. You need very little of the stuff, and it lasts up to 24 hours on the skin.
